Why you should never peel potatoes before you boil them – Kemi Olunloyo reveals

Pharmacist, journalist and public figure, Kemi Olunloyo has sensitized the public on the need to stop peeling potatoes before boiling them.

Kemi, who is fondly called Auntie Kemi by her fans, took to her social media handle to dish out the health information.

She said, “Potatoes [contain] a high amount of resistant starch. Do you know that we all need resistant starch?

“That’s what cleans our gut. So when you gonna eat a potato, don’t peel it. Just boil the potatoes after you wash their outside.

“Once it’s boiled… leave it to cool. When it’s cool, you can then peel it, and then eat your potatoes…

“It’s the cooling process that retains your resistant starch.

Resistant starch is a type of carbohydrate that protects the intestinal lining, keeping out harmful pathogens.

Resistant starch also helps lower inflammation in the bowel, which may decrease the risk of conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer.

The fermentation process induced by resistant starch can help regulate blood sugar levels, improve insulin sensitivity, and promote satiety.

Note: UCLA Health warns that if resistant starches are new to someone’s diet, the person should introduce them gradually, as consuming too much too soon can cause gas, bloating, or abdominal discomfort as the body’s gut microbiome adjusts to the new addition.

Cook & Cool Method: According to UCLA Health, you can increase the resistant starch content in carbs like potatoes, rice, and pasta by cooking them, allowing them to cool completely in the refrigerator, and then eating them cold (like in a potato or pasta salad).

This is a remarkable clarion call by from Auntie Kemi.

So, going forward, would you cook your potatoes unpeeled, let them cool to increase the resistant starch, and then eat them in order to enjoy the added health benefits — or would you prefer eating them hot and peeled right after boiling?

The Togolese Republic’s recent grant of 30-Day Visa-Free Access to all African citizens is remarkable.

We welcome Togo’s commitment to Pan Africanist ideals, and ask that (if it’s not yet so) all Afro Descendants be included as beneficiaries, so they can enjoy the colorful cultures and bountiful hospitality of the Togolese African Peoples.

  • Haiti AU Membership: The EU Outermost Regions & The Urgent Need For AU Outermost Regions

The European Union has nine designated Outermost Regions (ORs). These territories are located far from the European Continent but are integral parts of the EU. They are, namely, Canary Islands (Africa), Réunion (Africa), Guadeloupe (Caribbean),
    French Guiana (South America),
    Martinique (Caribbean),
    Mayotte (Indian Ocean),
    Saint Martin (Caribbean),
    Azores (North Atlantic), and
    Madeira (North Atlantic).

EU treaties apply to them in full, though they receive specially tailored support to offset economic challenges like remoteness, insularity, and difficult topographies.

During EU elections, the voters from these regions elect their own representatives to the EU Parliament. They use the Euro as their currency.

But when our own Haiti asked to join the African Union, they were rejected by the AU Commission and told they are not an African country. Is that fair?

Why can’t we see the Afro Descendant States of the African Diaspora as part of the AU’s Outermost Regions? AU Law, (Article 3(q) of the Protocol on Amendments to the AU’s Constitutive Act) makes it clear that all Africans of the Diaspora, (including Afro Descendants) are part of the Continent and should be invited and encouraged to participate fully in the AU.

The AU Commission must correct this error by welcoming Haiti and any other willing State of the African Diaspora into AU.

How the EU Commission helps the Outermost Territories

The EU Commission uses Article 349 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU (TFEU)to formulate tailored policies that account for the unique challenges of the ORs. To prevent standard EU laws from putting these remote territories at a disadvantage, the Commission actively incorporates OR-specificities into EU policies.

The Afro Descendants, which include Haiti, need to be invited and encouraged to join the AU, not kept out of it. One Africa.

The Prince & Princess Charles Offokaja Foundation has tirelessly worked to bring Haiti into the AU since 2019. And we need your help in this effort to give the Afro Descendants their Full rights in the African Family!

  • Supporting Haiti’s AU Membership Bid Is An Expression Of Pan-Africanism

Haiti is the first Black Republic in the world, having defeated slavery in 1804.

Years ago, Haiti formally applied to join the African Union. However, the application was not transmitted to Member States by the AU Commission as required under Article 29 of the AU Constitutive Act.

If we truly believe in Pan-Africanism and solidarity, supporting Haiti’s membership in the African Union is an important step.

  • Haiti AU Membership: Let’s Learn from the Arab League

The Arab League rightly accepts countries like Egypt, Somalia, Comoros, Djibouti, and Mauritania as Full Members — even though they are not located on the Arabian Peninsula. They are accepted because they are bona fide Arab countries.

Haiti is an African country in spirit, history, and blood. They threw off the yoke of Transatlantic slavery in 1804, becoming the first Black independent republic.

We therefore urge the African Union Commission to move Haiti’s membership bid forward as required under Article 29 of the AU Constitutive Act.

If we truly believe in Pan-Africanism, we should support Haiti joining the African Union — just as the Arab League accepts full membership for all Arab countries without rigid geographical limitations.
